Logically Constructed Eixample Neighborhood in Spain

Innovative, carefully planned and logical – three features of the Eixample district of Barcelona, the second largest city in Spain. Exposing a thoughtful and cleverly designed grid pattern crossed by wide avenues that allow the modern growth of the area, the neighborhood displays a striking view from the air. Designed by visionary Catalan urban planner Ildefons Cerdà, the district links the oldest neighborhood – Ciutat Vella – with what were once surrounding small towns like Sants, Gràcia or Sant Andreu. Long straight streets shape octagonal and triangular blocks, defining the neighborhood with bold forward thinking. Taking into account details like traffic, transport, sunlight and ventilation, Ildefons Cerdà created a fascinating neighborhood. (via freshome)

Barcelona Is Giving The Queers Their Own Pink Memorial

projectqueer:

While school districts in California battle for the right to simply include LGBTs in history textbooks, Barcelona is making the leap and erecting a queer monument to honor the contributions we’ve made throughout Spain’s history.

The memorial will take the form of a pink triangular stone, and its location will be unveiled in February — though one location under consideration is next to the pope-approved Sagrada Familia, where Benedict just got done railing against same-sex marriage in the same breath he consecrated the basilica. It will be enscribed: “In memory of the gays, lesbians and transsexual people who have suffered persecution and repression throughout history. Barcelona 2011.”

First Barcelona goes after conversion therapists, and now a monument to our people? Loving it.
